Yesterday I was working on my laptop at the car dealer's service center. My car was getting the standard maintenance required at 7,500 miles. About half way through the 75 minute wait time, I had to use the restroom. This was not an option. I had a lot of iced tea!
There were only three other people in the waiting area and not much traffic in and out. If a ne'er do well was interested in stealing my laptop while I was recycling tea, it would have been pretty easy.
My first instinct was to hide my beloved MacBook Pro, but there was really no good way to hide it. It would have been in someone's view right near an outside door. Then I had a better idea. When you truly understand how the human mind works, lots of creative options are available! I placed my laptop on the coffee table in plain view of all three people sitting in the waiting room. Without saying anything, I made them each responsible to watch out for my computer.
Now, to be fair, the risk was fairly minimal. This was a very nice dealership in a very nice part of town. Still, you can never tell just by looking at someone if they are likely to commit a crime.
So what lessons can we take from this? Quite a few actually, but here are my three favorites:
- Whether we realize it or not, we communicate in many different ways.
- Creative problem solving often takes going against natural instincts.
- Don't drink so much iced tea all at once.
